How To Choose A Load Bank For Transformer Testing

How to Choose a Load Bank for Transformer Testing

Selecting the right load bank hinges on inductive load simulation, capacity matching, and standard compliance. Transformers are inductive, so a resistive-inductive (RL) combined unit is mandatory to test reactive power capacity and power factor stability (target range: 0.8 lagging to 1.0). Pure resistive load banks are invalid for complete testing.

Capacity must cover 110%–125% of the transformer's rated kVA (e.g., 1250kVA for a 1000kVA unit) to support overload and temperature rise tests. Verify voltage/frequency compatibility (match the transformer's rating, e.g., 400V/10kV, 50/60Hz) and ensure high-voltage models meet insulation standards.

Heat dissipation is critical for long-duration tests (≥2 hours). Choose forced air-cooled or water-cooled designs with high-temperature-resistant components (nickel-chromium alloy) to prevent overheating. Equip multi-protections: overcurrent, overvoltage, short-circuit, and emergency stop (≤0.1s response).

Ensure compliance with IEC 60076, IEEE C57, or GB 50150 for accurate, traceable data. For lab tests, add automated monitoring; for field use, select a portable, IP54+ rated unit. Avoid undercapacity or uncooled models-they risk equipment damage and invalid results.
